Abstract

This presentation discusses a longitudinal action research project aimed to create a context for pre- and in-service teachers to develop professional knowledge about critical literacies by incorporating book clubs throughout the K-6 school day. Drawing on Vasquez, Tate, & Harste’s (2013) defining elements of critical literacies, we examine how a professional learning community including multiple stakeholders can support pre-service and in-service teacher’s professional development to create space for critical literacies across content areas in the elementary classroom. Especially in the context of recent debates about elementary children’s capabilities to engage critically with socio-political issues, we interrogate the ways that teacher education prepares teachers to promote anti-oppressive education through critical literacies.
