After the State rescinded the mandatory edTPA for teacher certification, some educator preparation programs (EPP) have been looking for alternatives to show teacher candidates’ evidence of readiness to become educators for social justice. The purpose of this action research study is to describe the experience applying an alternative culminating assessment for teacher certification to replace the edTPA in our program. This alternative assessment aims to use social justice principles, ungrading practices, and alignment to our institution mission, principles and pedagogies to determine teacher candidate readiness. The findings in this first year were positive. We demonstrated alignment to our institutional pedagogical framework. The study provides examples from teacher candidates’ artifacts that could inform and hopefully inspire teacher educators and other EPPs.
