Centering Educational Dignity by Expanding the Educational Gaze to Include Members' Perspectives

Fri, May 5, 11:30am to 1:00pm CDT (11:30am to 1:00pm CDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, Learning Sciences SIG Virtual Roundtable Room

Abstract

Building on conceptions of dignity-affirming education and theories of Knowledge In Use, in this roundtable session, we inquire into how the field of education values and measures learning and explore dignity-affirming alternatives that expand our educational gaze. To do so, we focus on empirical examples from guided play, positing that children’s play can be one of the most dignity-affirming activities that children engage in. We present transcripts and analytic memo excerpts from our Interaction Analyses of two cases of dignity-affirming guided play in both in-and out-of school STEAM contexts. Our goal is to facilitate critical discussion on (1) what counts as learning, (2) tensions in how analysts value learning, and (3) implications for schooling.
