Arming Educators: Perceptions and Impact on Preservice Educational Professionals

Fri, April 14, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Ohio’s recently approved House Bill 99 (HB 99) contains provisions related to “arming teachers” (e.g., school boards can authorize staff to carry firearms with 24 hours of initial training). We created and disseminated a survey to 600 pre-service educational professionals to learn about their perceptions of this and other provisions of HB 99. Data will be analyzed to examine how HB 99 affects career choices and perceptions, and whether these differ based on relevant demographic factors. It is anticipated that the findings will reveal implications for recruiting and retaining school staff, as well as for policy makers. Despite the focus on Ohio law, the presentation will have broader relevance given increasing discussion and legislative activity on this topic nationally.
