Abstract

This methodological paper examines particular sites of meaning making in a visual study with Black first-generation college students. A participant photography project was utilized to explore the transition experience and sense of belonging among Black first-generation college students attending historically White universities. This paper examines how meaning was made of the images produced in the project across various sites. Visual and narrative data will be used examine the participants image making strategies, the types of images captured in the project and the visual stories that were conveyed by the participants. Finally, I will discuss implications regarding the intended and unintended audiences of the images.
