Abstract

This study aims to answer potential validity concerns for using student eligibility status for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) as a proxy variable for socioeconomic status (SES) in NAEP reporting after the national implementation of Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). For this purpose, this study examines the approaches that NAEP has used to collect the NSLP data to maintain the validity of NSLP eligibility since the national implementation of CEP and analyzes the percentage and performance of NSLP-eligible students by type of school NSLP participation and the distribution of NSLP-eligible students by level of school poverty. The results of the study provide supporting evidence for the continued validity of NSLP eligibility as a proxy variable for SES.
