Media Literacies, Media Futures, and Social Injustice: Analyzing Dominant Discourses in Canadian Film Schools

Abstract

While media industry inequities are well established, there is a dearth of research on how media/film production educational programs engage with these inequities, or with critical education and social justice movements. This gap in scholarship raises important questions about the relationship between film schools and the workplace abuses and representational harms of mass media culture. My study aims to contribute to this gap by reporting research from a critical discourse analysis of film production program websites in the context of industry inequities and scholarly and industry calls for more socially just curricula. This research is the first step of a study that will engage media educators in reviewing how they engage, resist and/or transform dominating discourses in film production education.
