Selective doctoral programs have resources to support their PhD students in navigating the rigors of academic life. However, many of these resources are not catered or applicable to student parents. Limited research has centered on the experiences of Latina doctoral student mothers, a population often overlooked in research and institutional policy discussions. Based on two rounds of semi-structured interviews, participants highlight specific needs that were (un)met and the multiple responsibilities they balance as student parents. Building on validation theory, this paper highlights the experiences of three Latina doctoral student mothers and how they perceived their graduate departments and faculty (in)validated their academic presence, unique family challenges, and career aspirations, especially during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
