"They Got Me": First-Generation, Low-Income College Student of Color Success and Faculty Interactions

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom III

Abstract

College students of Color who are also from first-generation, low-income (FLI) backgrounds are less likely to complete college degrees compared to their more advantaged peers; however, little is known about supportive classroom and cocurricular experiences which bolster their success and graduation. To explore these experiences from an anti-deficit achievement framework, I conducted a narrative inquiry with successful FLI college students of Color and recent graduates. In seeking to conceptualize faculty influences on marginalized student success, my interviews with FLI college students of Color establish a need for faculty professional development to support best practices to increase FLI college students of Color academic outcomes.
