Interrogating Consequential Organizations: Where's the Middle Level Movement Today?

Abstract

In an effort to advance the middle school movement, this work-in-progress paper examines the research, reports, grants, and publications from three organizations that support educational progress: the Carnegie Corporation, the Educational Testing Service, and the Institute of Education Sciences. Trends within and across these organizations regarding research on middle grades education show that these organizations include a preponderance of research on mathematics and science and research using quantitative methodology. These findings stand in contrast with the more holistic research agenda (Mertens et al., 2016) of professional middle level research communities. Collaboration among these organizations and the Association of Middle Level Education and Middle Level Education Research may help to add perspective and dimension to existing and future studies.
