Design Thinking: Co-Constructing Vocational Education and Training Curricula in Digital Transformation Processes

Abstract

Promoting co-construction and respecting stakeholders‘ voices are central means to master challenges at current workplaces - especially, the influences of digitalization. By the method of Design Thinking, empathy, ideation and generation of first solutions are evoked and realized by co-construction. We run two Design-Thinking-Workshops in Vocational Education and Training (VET) including different stakeholders (as firms, ministries, trade unions, teachers, trainers, trainees). Two research questions were formulated with regard to the quality of trainees‘ educational needs and of how these needs can be met; by taking explicitly the perspective of trainees. The results show that the participants leave traditional, well-worn paths of thought and came up with new ideas for curricula and means to meet trainees‘ needs and overcoming imbalances.
