Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

To better understand the different work realities of the principals and assistant principals of educational institutions, this study proposes to examine how the job demands (e.g., pace and amount of work, ambiguities about work, uncertainty about the future) and job resources (e.g., recognition, participation in decision-making) of the job demands-resources (JD-R) model impact the satisfaction and frustration of their basic psychological needs (relatedness, competence, autonomy) according to self-determination theory (SDT). A total of 632 participants (377 principals and 255 assistant principals) took part in the study. The results show significant differences between these two job positions. The results pave the way for a better understanding of the professional development of principals and assistant principals.
