Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Colorado

Abstract

This case study was conducted in K-12 independent school. The purpose was to contribute to the wider understanding of teacher leadership. The research team identified four themes. The teacher work theme included positivity, shared expectations for professionalism, and rigor. Communication included unique internal and external communication strategies. There was a learning culture that utilized unconventional information sources. A fourth theme was operational support, including a complex operational framework and technological infrastructure. Results highlight the holistic nature of teacher leadership and suggest that teacher leadership with discrete conceptual boundaries may not be achievable. Teacher leadership is a complex, sophisticated state of being. Results challenge school governance stereotypes and invite educators to work with a sense of vocation and mission.
