The NPBEA addressed principal well-being when they revised the PSEL in 2015. There is a gap in the literature regarding how to increase principal longevity. This qualitative study explores the personal and professional well-being of principals (N=25). Principals reported they were not intentional regarding their own well-being. They practiced unhealthy behaviors which exacerbated stress and burnout. Spirituality was considered a major emphasis when speaking to personal well-being. Responses for professional well-being were more varied. Principals found it easier to care for others in the workplace over themselves. Descriptors for the five PERMA domains were apparent as principals described their well-being. Principal mentoring using the PERMA framework is suggested as a positive way to increase longevity in the profession.
