This study examined the effects of prompts on learning outcomes in digital learning environments. To identify the most effective prompt features a total of 70 articles were analyzed. In the first step, a qualitative literature analysis revealed what kind of prompts were used and how their features fit into a created conceptual model. In the second step, the effect sizes are integrated in a quantitative meta-analysis. With random-effects models, the results showed that prompts significantly enhanced learning outcomes (d = 0.49) relative to the control condition. A moderator analysis revealed the highest efficacy (d = 0.172) for action-based prompts relying on groups of learners. The lowest efficacy (d = 0.325) was reached with time-based prompts for all learners.
