Pursuing Professional Learning by Using Social Media: How Do Instructional Designers Apply Self-Regulated Learning?

Thu, May 4, 4:15 to 5:45pm CDT (4:15 to 5:45pm CDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, Instructional Technology SIG Virtual Paper Room

Abstract

The instructional design and technology field is dynamic, requiring instructional designers (IDs) to stay abreast through continuous professional learning. Social media (SM) offers affordances to collapse the time, geographical, and financial limitations of informal professional learning, but challenges still exist. Additionally, continuous professional learning requires proactive actions, wherein self-regulated learning (SRL) plays an important role. However, not all professionals know the effective strategies to promote SRL skills. This phenomenological study focuses on IDs’ (N = 17) experiences conducting professional learning within an SM environment, explored from the SRL lens. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings include SRL strategies conducted by IDs. They also reported facing challenges, but the challenges could be overcome by applying SRL.
