Enhancing Online Course Design in Real Time Using Qualitative Formative Evaluations

Thu, April 13, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Student feedback on courses comes after the course is complete and cannot be used to modify a course in real-time. The feedback obtained does not directly benefit the students providing the feedback. A qualitative research study was conducted to explore if the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) could be an effective formative evaluative tool to inform online course design and delivery in real-time. This study was conducted across six different fully online graduate-level courses, and the findings show that the CIQ can provide useful and actionable information for course instructors. Three findings emerged: the CIQ can inform course design, it prioritizes the student voice, and the findings reinforce the enduring factors that contribute to effective online course design and delivery.
