Abstract

This study aims to ascertain how social-emotional learning (SEL) is portrayed in recent graphic novels for young readers featuring Asian and Asian American characters. The theoretical framework includes the SEL competencies outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors established by Rudine Sims Bishop. Through a qualitative content analysis, we coded two graphic novels recognized by the Harvey Awards Best Children or Young Adult Book category featuring Asian and Asian American representations in the United States. This research provides implications for using high-quality graphic novels in SEL curricula to aid in the development of empathy and understanding of underrepresented groups.
Keywords: Graphic novels, children’s literature, social-emotional learning
