Toward a Critical Race Technology Theory in Education: Interrogating Sociotechnical Racism in Educational Research, Pedagogy, and Practice

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

The field of education is increasingly becoming entrenched with sociotechnical systems, whether through the adoption of educational technologies, the implementation of school-based surveillance systems, or the shift to digital research contexts. It is inarguable that technology now plays an indispensable role in educational research, pedagogy and practice. Yet the field lacks a theoretical framework that can interrogate the material and discursive consequences of using, implementing, designing and/or researching digital technologies in race-evasive and techno-chauvinist ways. This work offers critical race technology theory (CRTT) in education as a theoretical framework that enables scholars to conduct techno-structural examinations of digital systems in ways that expose and disrupt anti-Blackness as the ‘default setting’ of digital information systems.
