ChemVLab+: Evaluating Students' Chemical Reasoning Skills Developed Through Virtual Lab Activities (Poster 20)

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

The Next Generation Science Standards have emphasized science teaching that promotes inquiry-based learning rather than rote memorization and is meaningfully integrated in authentic science practice. ChemVLab+ is one intervention that aims to bring the three dimensions of NGSS into high school chemistry classrooms, with special attention to chemistry-specific reasoning and experimentation. Prior work examined a randomized control trial of ChemVLab+ and found that ChemVLab+ students outperformed their active control peers. The current paper extends these results by examining score distributions to shed light on the pattern of variation between treatment and control students, presenting a sample scoring rubric to demonstrate how difficult-to-assess skills were measured, and using regression techniques to investigate the relationship between virtual lab engagement and student outcomes.
