Abstract

Peer relations can affect students' academic motivation; however, the role of peers in students' motivation remains understudied compared to other social influences (Juvonen & Knifsend, 2016). The current investigation examined 2,895 abstracts to explore the extent to which researchers presenting in American Educational Research Association (AERA) units most directly focused on academic motivation (i.e., Division C, sections 2A and 2B, and the Motivation in Education Special Interest Group [SIG]) have examined peer influences on learners’ motivation over the past decade. Multiple coding steps were used to identify and examine the characteristics of studies focused on peer influence on motivational outcomes. We discuss patterns that emerged as well as gaps in the literature that can guide future work in this area.
