Abstract

This study examined how socioeconomic disparities in adolescents’ expected occupational status had changed from 2000 to 2018, using nationally representative data for 15-year-old students from the Programme for the International Student Assessment. Results showed that although adolescents from high socioeconomic status (SES) families had significantly higher expected occupational status than their counterparts from low SES families, regardless of birth cohorts, this observed socioeconomic gap in adolescents’ expected occupational status had decreased especially from 2003 to 2018. The declining trend was more evident between students at the 90th percentile of the SES distribution and students at the 10th percentile than between students at the 75th percentile and students at the 25th percentile. Regression results generally confirmed this declining trend since 2003.
