Science Lead Editors and Racial Equity: An Investigation of the Journal Review Process

Abstract

Advancing racial equity in science education remains an unrealized goal in general and specifically in the journal review process. Although studies address the peer review process, shortcomings, and influence on the scientific field writ large, lacking editors’ insight in promoting equitable outcomes and fostering a work culture of racial equity during the review process. The present study aims to answer two questions. First, “What preparation is provided for journal reviewers examining racial equity work?” Second, “In the minds of science editors, what makes for a strong reviewer? Adopting McNair and colleagues’ framework for racial equity, we explore the perspectives of science lead editors and provide recommendations for equitable outcomes in the review process.
