Colleges and universities have responded to globalization by institutionalizing global citizenship education (GCE). Some critics warn that the current initiatives contribute to existing global inequities and instead, advocate for a critical approach to GCE. This qualitative study explores how GCE is understood and implemented at a community college in the San Francisco bay area based on interviews with the college president, a faculty member, and an alum. Five themes emerged based on coding and thematic analysis of transcribed interview data: Connection and Belongingness; Self-Respect and Identity; Interconnectedness; Advocacy for Self and Others; and Democracy and Justice-informed global citizenship. Recommendations suggest that the college faculty take on more transformation leadership roles to institutionalize critical GCE.
