Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a rapid and global shift to virtual learning. The transition raised particular concerns about students with disabilities’ access to inclusive virtual educational formats. The purpose of this research was to examine lessons learned from autistic student AAC users who type, spell, and point to communicate regarding their virtual learning experiences during the pandemic. Results of this study focus on foundational elements of inclusive education in virtual environments based on information learned from students. As the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, the findings from this study can inform the design of equitable and inclusive virtual learning opportunities that center neurodiversity and communication access.
