Chinese Patriotism: Inward and Outward Perspectives

Abstract

This paper begins by elaborating on the distinction of inward and outward patriotism that has been introduced and thematised by Marianna Papastephanou to indicate the Janus-faced nature of patriotism. It then illustrates how an inward patriotism has been intrinsic to patriotic education in China from its beginnings, and points out that an outward patriotism has emerged and been increasingly emphasised in today’s China. Finally, this paper proposes that the risks and potentials of both inward and outward patriotism should be realised and given full consideration, and a balanced patriotism can help accommodate people’s diverse needs better and make Chinese development sustainable and in accordance with people’s interests.
