Spatial Inequity of Access to Mathematics/Science Pipeline for Rural School Students

Abstract

Geographical remoteness and area-level disadvantages have failed to provide diverse educational opportunities for students in rural regions. In particular, the lack or sometimes absence of access to rigorously challenging academic programs at rural secondary schools can widen the disparity of achievement between rural and urban students and worsen the lagged share of college degree holders in rural areas. This study focuses on the accessibility of rigorous academic programs for mathematics and science in conjunction with uneven rural geographies. Focusing on access to the mathematics/science pipeline in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, this study maps heterogeneity in schooling experiences across rural areas and unveils the spatial equity of quality curricula for rural secondary school students.
