Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic had a dramatic and largely deleterious impact on education systems across the world. Specifically, school closures led to academic losses, particularly for the most vulnerable students. Among such marginalized groups, immigrant and first-generation students experienced particularly negatively consequences from the pandemic. The goal of this study was to examine the confluence of the pandemic with immigration status on student educational experiences, using data from three nations collected through the Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS). Results of the analyses revealed differential impacts of immigration status across nations, with more positive outcomes associated with a combination of greater school support for working with immigrant students during the pandemic and more positive national attitudes towards immigrants.
