Abstract

The AP program has offered college-level knowledge and skills for selective high school students since 1955. Despite the increasing participation in AP, empirical evidence on the benefits of AP has presented mixed and nonlinear effects. This research aims to conduct a systematic review by exploring the literature on AP on high school and college success to clarify the influence of rigorous programs in high school. This study presents a mean effect of taking and completing AP courses on academic success quantified as standardized test scores and GPA. These synthesized findings are expected to be distinguished from previous studies that have investigated determinants of AP course takings in terms of quality access to AP.
