Abstract

The Motivation for Mathematics Abbreviated Instrument (MMAI) was designed to measure intrinsic motivation, mastery approach orientations, performance approach orientations, and expectancy; however, previous validation studies have relied on data from university undergraduates. This study is a first step towards expanding the validity argument to high school students. Here, the MMAI was administered to 157 students from an urban high school that serves an historically under-resourced population. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a strong fit. Analyses evinced strong discriminant validity, acceptable convergent validity, and good construct and item reliabilities. Hence, the MMAI was found to have strong structural validity and to be a reliable measure of the four latent constructs for this population of high school math students.
