Fostering "T-Shaped" Legal Practitioners Through Experiential Legal Education

Abstract

Experiential learning has been advocated to better prepare legal students for the complex issues they will face as practitioners. A research consortium of Dutch institutes offering higher legal education set out to gain more empirical insights into how experiential learning can be best facilitated in a legal context. During the presentation we will provide an overview of the lessons learned from three empirical studies: 1) on teaching strategies to facilitate experiential learning in online settings, 2) on what learning outcomes legal students reported, and 3) how graduates perceive their preparedness to kick off their career as legal practitioners. The insights contribute to a more evidence-based and pedagogically robust way of implementing experiential legal education.
