Teacher production has important implications for our education system. We find enrollment in teacher preparation programs has decreased substantially over the last decade. While there is an uptick in enrollment in 2019, completion has consistently declined from 2010 to 2019. The decrease in the enrollment and production of teachers dovetails with an increasing need for teachers in 2016, leading to a dramatic need to draw teachers from the reserve pool. By 2018, about 125,000 teachers were drawn from the reserve pool to meet demands. Without an increase in the supply of new teachers to meet on-going demand, we will continue to rely on the reserve pool of teachers, a situation which may not be sustainable.
