This paper reports on the administration of the Knowledge of Racial Literacy (KoRaL) survey to a nationwide sample of 277 novice teachers- those seeking initial certification and in their first five years of practice. This research addresses two concurrent problems: first, teachers’ development of racial literacy is an important goal in teacher preparation, but few tools exist to measure it at scale. Further, racial literacy varies based on individuals’ personal experiences, so demographic differences require teacher education programs to differentiate their curriculums. The administration of KoRaL addresses both the issue of scale and individual differences. Findings indicate significant differences in novice teachers’ racial literacy based on their U.S. region and past classroom experiences.
