How Institutionalization Shapes Latinx Student Socialization and Identity Development Within a Latinx Campus Culture Center

Abstract

As the Latinx college student population grows, university leaders must contend with providing existing identity spaces with institutionalized support to increase Latinx student success. To explore how institutionalization shapes Latinx socialization and identity development, this embedded case study examines student and alumni experiences within one Latinx Campus Culture Center. Findings suggest that institutionalization can shape Latinx socialization and identity development in potentially detrimental ways while also creating opportunities for a Center to be more inclusive and intersectional. This study can inform how university leaders go about institutionalizing identity spaces in student-centered ways.
