Dual-Language Immersion Leadership Voices: A Multilingual Leadership Development Collaborative

Thu, April 13, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Lobby - Level 3, Columbus AB

Abstract

This qualitative study, to understand leadership perspectives on the context and design of professional learning for dual language immersion (DLI) programs, is the culminating research on a three-year California Department of Education bilingual teacher professional development grant which ended in 2021.With an urgency for bilingually authorized teacher preparation, the project partnered a county office of education with a university to prepare administrative and teacher leaders and qualified teachers for DLI. Analysis of focus group/interviews of seven partnering district leadership teams suggest three main themes that add dual immersion leadership voices to current research: effectiveness of a safe network for district administrators to address problems of practice; cross-district collaboration around unique DLI issues; and, advantages of virtual professional learning.
