This paper challenges ethnographic research norms that are often rooted in whiteness. The centering of whiteness that privileges academics as the only valid knowledge producers enables epistemological injustice. Building on humanizing and decolonizing research methodologies, this paper argues that researchers need to take the full range of complex contexts, identities, and cultures into account when rethinking researcher location and what counts as knowledge production. Using data from a long-term ethnography of a university/school partnership, the paper puts forward an argument for theorizing schools as heterotopias that have the potential to work for justice and equity in schools.
