Abstract

Non-tenure track faculty (NTTF) are the new faculty majority, so it is crucial for campuses to support their effectiveness and help them thrive. While sustained professional development (SPD) opportunities such as faculty learning communities are generally more effective than one-time workshops, these programs are designed with tenured and tenure-track faculty in mind. In this study, we explored 14 campuses that have modified SPD for NTTF using interviews and document analysis. We describe four models of SPD that emerged (faculty learning communities, curricular redesign and departmental action teams, certification programs, and discussion groups) and present a multilevel model of influences on the success of SPD for NTTF, highlighting opportunities and constraints that can benefit other campuses in designing SPD for NTTF.
