Diversity in STEM leads to increased innovation and global impact. However, children from diverse backgrounds learn early that science is not for them. Science content is not heavily foregrounded in early childhood classrooms, and diversity is often lacking in available science picturebooks. This is consequential, because children develop STEM identities at a very early age, and these early identities are drivers of future educational and career choices. We describe a research-based rubric for selecting picturebooks that depict accurate science content and diverse character representation in engaging, high quality literature. Infusing such books into early childhood classrooms can expand opportunities for all young children to develop STEM identities and consider their own potential in science fields.
