Abstract

Textbook representations have often been critiqued of being influenced by power relations/ideologies and not truth. As the new high school English curricula in Taiwan and South Korea experienced reforms incorporating global issues, it is crucial to critically analyze textbooks in both regions for examining whether they incorporate the reality of global issues. Informed by Freire’s critical theory, analysis results of 10 textbooks from Taiwan and South Korea found that while relevant global topics ( COVID, sustainable development) are covered, the representation is biased where local positive examples are accentuated while negative topics are presented as global problems disconnected to local realities. Implications are explored for future textbook analysis and understanding how textbooks are grounds for contesting truth and power relations.
