The Missing Voice: Understanding the Experiences of Mature Immigrant Students in Postsecondary Education in Canada

Abstract

Many Canadian immigrants enrol in postsecondary education (PSE) to become more competitive in the labor market. However, the experiences or the truth of these immigrant students remains largely unnoticed on account of being generalized as domestic students. This study uses a qualitative research design that includes interviews with mature immigrant students to better understand the truth about their educational journey from their perspective. Bandura’s social cognitive theory is used as a theoretical framework to assess immigrant student experiences. Four main themes focus on circumstances influencing immigrants to pursue PSE, barriers faced by immigrant students in PSE, outcomes of PSE, and the immigrant student identity. Findings reveal the important role PSE providers can play in helping immigrant students settle in Canada.
