Critical Online Information Evaluation: A Comprehensive Model for Information Literacy Curriculum and Assessment Design

Abstract

The recent evolution of technology and the Internet has transformed the ways in which we find and share information. Research shows that citizens of all ages and backgrounds struggle with critical online information evaluation (COIE), which could result in serious social and political consequences. Although it is crucial to develop students’ competencies in this key construct of information literacy, there is currently no interdisciplinary framework to guide COIE curriculum and assessment design. We addressed this gap by developing a comprehensive model for COIE theoretically grounded in Evidence-Centered Design and Understanding by Design. We briefly describe the facets of our model and discuss metacognitive and sociocultural obstacles to developing and measuring COIE proficiency.
