Antiracist Policy Decision Making in School Districts: Designing a Research-Practice Partnership to Address Systemic Racism

Abstract

Racial inequities in education persist in part because the solutions districts and schools choose to employ largely ignore why and how institutional and structural racism is the root cause of education inequities. Yet, these inequities can be redressed if districts and schools are committed to combating racism in practice and structures of schooling. This paper is part of a larger project that explores how school districts employ anti-racist policy decision-making processes to achieve equity in school policy, improvement, and practice. We present findings, which point to the need for more space and time for educators who want to advance racial equity, from our collaboration with one school implementing an anti-racist policy decision-making protocol we developed that exposes systemic racism.
