Community-based learning experiences or “third spaces” have the potential to expand preservice teachers’ understanding of alternative forms of learning that highlight “funds of knowledge”. This paper showcases the collaboration that transpired between a Midwestern College of Education (COE) and rural community partner organizations (CPOs). We specifically discuss how collaboration with community partners strengthened community ties between the COE and local community partner organizations, as well promoted community-based pedagogy for the benefit of preparing preservice teachers (PSTs) for diverse classrooms. Findings from this study revealed the significance of “third spaces” within teacher education because these alternative, hybrid spaces provided a more synergistic way of supporting PSTs’ learning through the collaborative partnership of teacher education courses, university-based field experiences and community partners.
