In this paper, I describe the participatory process of a photovoice grounded critical theory project, suggesting that researchers can integrate the systematic procedures of photovoice while honoring the participatory goals of photovoice. Centering my discussion, I reflect on a recent project that explored institutional whiteness in inquiry to develop actionable knowledge for racial justice in research design. Reporting on this project's methodological strategies, I describe participatory constant comparison, theoretical sampling through concept funneling, and collective memoing. The methods described in this paper re-envision grounded theory from its essentializing, extracting, and reductionist roots to a holistic, participatory, and intersubjective interpretative process geared for social change.
