Warning signs for the health of the American democracy abound. While the contemporary challenges have multiple manifestations and roots, social media and the Internet more broadly are implicated in prominent ways. Such recognition has led to urgent calls for more and better media literacy education at the K-12 level. Accordingly, this study examines the extent to which state level legislation supports the provision of civically oriented media literacy education. Through an investigation of extant state level policy, analysis of findings suggests that existing media literacy policy within these United States is not only not prevalent, but also varied, inconsistent, and without an explicit attention to equity.
