Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom VIII

Abstract

Students on the autism spectrum are increasingly enrolling in postsecondary institutions. This qualitative case study documents three cases of liberal arts colleges in one state in the Northeastern US. Data include interviews with a variety of stakeholders, such as faculties and disability services coordinators. Findings suggest that students with autism tend to be able to sustain focus on areas of deep interest, which can be beneficial in academic pursuits, and that the liberal arts setting allows for close relationships with professors and advisors that can prevent autistic students from “falling through the cracks.” However, a small liberal arts setting may present particular challenges including small class sizes where expectations of participation are high.
