Implications of a Data Literacy and Cultural Proficiency Professional Development Program for Community College Instructors (Poster 3)

Abstract

Existing research suggests that there is a need for high-quality professional development (PD) in data literacy and Cultural Proficiency for community college instructors. As such, the San Diego and Imperial Counties Community Colleges implemented a PD program aimed at inspiring data-driven decision-making and culturally proficient teaching practices. Out of 245 instructors, 223 completed the program in 2020—a 91 percent completion rate. Using mixed-methods research, this study assesses the efficacy of the PD program in training instructors to use student outcomes data for pedagogical improvements in culturally diverse classrooms. The findings support future iterations of the PD program specifically and inform community college instructor professional development broadly.
