Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of an investigation that seeks to understand how school leaders make sense during the initial phase of a large-scale reform that has begun to be implemented in Chile, known as the New Public Education. Twelve school principals involved in this change were interviewed. The results show that there is a wide diversity of meanings associated with this reform, although these can be classified into three main ones (paradigm change, educational change, and bureaucratic change). The research made it possible to identify some factors associated with the meaning that leaders assign to the reform, as well as to describe some of the consequences that this sense-making process has on its implementation.
