Predicting Educators' Burnout and Turnover With a Measure of Social Emotional Skills and School Climate

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: Lobby Level, Cuvee Room

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the issues of burnout and turnover in the field of education. This study examines the relationship between social and emotional (SE) skills, school climate, and burnout and turnover intentions in educators. The impact of job factors and demographic information is also explored in this analysis. Results indicate that several SE skills and school climate indicators predict burnout, while one SE skill predicts turnover intentions. This study suggests that improvements to school climate (staff relationships and school safety), in addition to SE skills professional development, may help to alleviate some of the burnout these educators are experiencing.
