"Truth" in Health Professions Education and Research Should Include Voices of Lived Experience

Abstract

Background: Health professions education and research traditionally exclude the voices of patients, the very people that healthcare professionals are ultimately meant to serve.
Issues: Limiting patients’ voices in health professions education is detrimental to students’ development.
Solutions: Patient-educators are individuals with lived experience who share their perspective and knowledge with health professions education students. Patient-educators offer unique insights by introducing students to examples driven by their individual experience.
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe important truths that are missing from health professions classrooms and research, illuminate whose voices are being left out, explain the consequences of those omissions, and propose solutions for moving forward including the intentional incorporation of patient-educators using relevant educational theories and research frameworks.
